With this, many people are ready to take road trips to experience the outdoor freedom that they have missed during the winter months. Of course, one of the experiences that most embodies that freedom is driving your convertible with the roof down.
If you don’t have a convertible but are considering getting one, TrueCar has a list of recommendations for the 2022 model year. Here are the top five options.
The 2022 BMW 4 Series
Only in the second generation will the 2022 BMW 4 Series be available in two versions. The cheaper, more popular option is the 430i convertible, and according to Car and driver, prices start at about $54,295. That said, the $65,195 BMW M440i is also an option, and it’s configured with a 3.0L engine and hybrid system support, resulting in significantly more power.
Powertrain may vary depending on trim level. In addition, there are several styling options to meet the needs of the buyers, something which: TrueCar notes as one of BMW’s pros. Other pluses include a high-quality cab finish and exceptional all-round performance.
However, blindingly shiny work and a cramped back seat are two of the drawbacks noted by the auto website.
The 2022 Audi A5
In second place on TrueCar’s list is the Audi A5 convertible from 2022, a luxury 4-seater car with sharp handling. Like the 430i, there is a 2.0L turbo engine under the hood of the A5, and the starting prices are also relatively comparable. While rear-wheel drive is an option on the BMW 4 Series, all versions of the A5 convertible have all-wheel drive.
Downsides include a relatively cramped rear passenger area and little space in the trunk. In addition, buyers may have to pay more to get some optional safety features. As for the reasons for choosing this option, it handles exceptionally well, and the interior appears to be mostly made of premium materials.
The 2022 BMW M4
Although based on the 4 Series, the 2022 BMW M4 is not an entry-level convertible, as evidenced by its powerful engine and nearly $90,000 price tag. The vehicle delivers 503 horsepower, produced by a 3.0L turbo engine. It also only comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission, although the coupe version allows buyers to opt for a 6-speed manual transmission.
Four-wheel drive is standard. Plus, the acceleration and handling allow buyers to get from point A to B in a fun way. TrueCar calls these two the main advantages of the M4 convertible. The only major flaw is that it isn’t as refined as some of its competitors.
The 2022 BMW Z4
In the TrueCar ranking, the BMW Z4 from 2022 comes in fifth place, with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class on top. Nevertheless, since the Mercedes-Benz option is still a 2021 model, it will not be on this list.
The 2-seater Z4 is an impressive machine in its own right with two engine options, including a 2.0L turbo inline-4 gas and a 3.0L turbo inline-6 gas alternative. American news notes that the Z4 can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.2 or 3.9 seconds, depending on the equipment and engine.
It responds great thanks to its smooth, powerful engine options, resulting in a pleasurable driving experience. Plus, it does a great job of quieting the interior once you pop the hood back up. Nevertheless, the car website notes that there are sportier alternatives on the market. In addition, the lack of manual transmission and four-wheel drive is not ideal.
The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette
Finally, there is the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette with its 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 engine. TrueCar considers the Corvette a “great bargain” even with its starting price of nearly $70,000 for the convertible option. Like the 2022 BMW Z4, the Corvette is a 2-seater with rear-wheel drive only as an option.
Despite snappy acceleration thanks to its powerful engine, it can easily be a daily driver with a chic, comfortable interior. TrueCar also touts its nimble handling, though it has issues with the car’s limited safety technology and lack of manual transmission.
