Awesome Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week: Backless Car

When it comes to electric cars, China’s largest online shopping site, Alibaba, has just about everything. And that variety has kept me in the loop, so to speak, by finding the weirdest and funniest out there for my weekly Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week column. That often means funny-shaped electric vehicles or sometimes strange mashups that take to the sea or even the sky. But sometimes it’s not what is added to a vehicle that makes it special, but what is subtracted. And that’s the case this week, where this funky little electric car appears to have its rear ripped off without anyone noticing.

Now I’m not against a car with good airflow. Who doesn’t like to drive a convertible every now and then?

But there’s a difference between taking the top down and taking the back off, and that difference makes something like that end up on an over-the-top Chinese shopping site.

What you are looking at, ladies and gentlemen, is a strange little electric car that seems to be missing much of its bodywork. In fact, it’s not just the rear that seems to have fallen off. There are also no doors. In fact, it’s basically just a chassis with a roof, as far as I can think of.

I think if you live in a rainy area with no wind, you might stay more or less dry in this thing. And if the windshield wiper is any indication, they expect some rain.

Of course, some water may try to get past the windshield. But since the small electric car can only go 40 km/h, I don’t think you’ll have too much air around you to worry about.

Although the 80-120 km (50-75 miles) range per charge should at least keep you coming all the way through town and back, and probably several times while doing that.

However, I’m not sure if this is the best city car. It has more of a beachy vibe to it in my opinion. It’s already largely a golf cart, so it would be great for an island community (and especially one that, again, doesn’t see much rain). And for a particularly sunny spot, that roof just calls for a cheap solar panel on it.

Loaded with three passengers, or perhaps two passengers plus a crew member/driver, this little cart just might make a great small utility vehicle for local family trips. Taking your kids to school would definitely get some looks in the car pool lane and at the same time could be a great way to humiliate your kids.

And I saved the best for last: the price! A cool $2,300 could make this naughty boy out of you, excluding shipping, handling, batteries, tariffs, brokerage fees, headlight fluid, or any number of unexpected costs you might incur while importing.

But hey, it’s all worth it when you have the most unique electric car in town. Rivian owners, eat your heart out! Who needs a gear tunnel when you have a whole gear cab? I have a feeling this Alibaba special is the next big thing in electric EVs!
