#4 Progressive: low fares for high-risk drivers
BBB rating: Not judged
AM Best Financial Power: A+
JD Power claims satisfaction: 862/1,000
While the company offers reasonable rates to most motorists, Progressive has specialized in serving high-risk drivers for decades. With statistics that rank college students among the riskiest groups, Progressive is worth considering.
The company offers both good student and distant student discounts, along with a relatively rare discount specifically aimed at teenage drivers. This could help reduce the cost of Progressive car insurance for younger students.
Keep in mind that Progressive has below average customer satisfaction due to the way it handles claims. Our team contacted Progressive for comment on the claim process, but received no response.

#5 Travelers: Most Cover Options
Travelers is another great provider that offers reasonable rates for student auto insurance. Students can take advantage of many discounts to keep funding levels on the lower side. In addition to student discounts, the company offers savings for taking a defensive driving course and for insuring hybrid or electric vehicles. And the optional accident forgiveness program can keep your premiums from increasing after an accident.
Travelers receive a less than excellent score on the claims process, receiving just 871 out of 1,000 points in the JD Power 2021 US Auto Claims Satisfaction Study℠. We contacted Travelers with a comment on the claim process but never received a response.
