Cairns set record for stolen cars

Police in Cairns are begging motorists to hide their keys as car thefts rise to record highs.

This year, 773 cars have been stolen so far, while last year’s previous record was 782.

That is expected to be broken this week with nearly five months of the calendar year to go.

Police say it is extremely worrying, especially given the general young age of the perpetrators.

“We are obviously concerned about the safety of the public, other legitimate road users who happen to be on the road at the time these young people are driving,” said Detective Inspector Kevin Goan.

“We are well above the state average… in terms of resolving illegal use of motor vehicles and recovering stolen vehicles.

Det Insp Goan said it is a complex problem, with preventive measures involving many government and non-governmental agencies and the police.

“There is a lot of work for all of us,” he said.

“This is not just a police issue, there are other agencies that deal with juvenile delinquency.

“I see that the more collaboration between agencies and with the support services, we can lower these numbers.”

However, he said the motoring public also has a big role to play.

“The vehicle was stolen with the keys,” he said.

“We still see cars that have been stolen or used illegally, with the keys hidden in the sun visor of the motor vehicle, sometimes left in the ignition, other times in the ashtray or under the floor mat.

“Our message is that we need to let the public know where to put their keys, who has access and if possible keep them out of sight of anyone illegally entering their home to steal them.

“The message is not being heard.

“If they don’t have the keys, they abandon any prospect of stealing them.”
