The good news? They have him. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office today shared the story of a high-speed chase that officers on the ground had to call off for security reasons. But air units were high above helping capture 20-year-old Richard St. Leger off Pompano Beach. Police say Army was driving a stolen Mercedes SUV and a chase through several Florida counties reached speeds of 280 miles per hour.

At one point in the chase, they say Leger turned off his headlights while going 240 miles per hour. The only way they could stop him was by using stop sticks and stingers.

Rather than calling it a day when the vehicle was brought to a stop, Leger thought he had a chance to get away on foot. That turned out to be a mistake. A K-9 named Zorro got the job done and Leger was taken into custody. Leger is now charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing with disregard for safety and obstruction.
