The GMC Sierra 1500 is one of the best-selling cars in America right now, and one of the reasons it’s so popular is because it’s a practical truck.
Unfortunately, GMC takes away one of the many reasons why the truck is considered so practical. Here’s a look at the GMC Sierra 1500’s bed-side storage boxes and how they’re being discontinued.
A look at the GMC Sierra 1500 . bedside cabinets
According to GM Authority, bed storage boxes are a good way for people to get more storage space in their truck. GMC’s bedside storage boxes varied in size, but most were about 60 inches long, 19 inches high, and 10 inches deep. This gave them about seven cubic feet of payload, each able to carry about 50 pounds.
In addition to being able to hold larger items, these boxes also came with a removable center drawer that people could use for smaller items.
These bedside storage boxes also had fun uses, especially for tailgate parties. Each box had two cup holders and some drain plugs. This meant that the storage boxes at the bed of the truck could become a cooler when drivers needed one.
The primary purpose of these storage boxes was to provide a protected and enclosed space in the back of the truck. The boxes were sturdy and made of weather-resistant and corrosion-resistant material. This made them an excellent option for carrying gear that needed weather protection, such as camping gear or tools.
GMC will discontinue this feature
Unfortunately, while these features make the bedside storage boxes seem like a great option, GMC is ditching them for the latest version of the Sierra. It’s not clear why this decision was made, but it’s not that surprising. GM owns GMC and Chevy. The Chevy Silverado is very similar to the Sierra, and according to GM Authority, Chevy recently dropped this feature from the Silverado as well.
As with most things in the automotive world, it’s likely these bedside storage boxes were discontinued because not enough people chose them as an option. As some commentators on GM Authority wrote, this may have been a price issue, as these bedside storage boxes were an option that added about $1,000 to the truck’s price tag. For some people that might just be too expensive for what they got.
An overview of the latest GMC Sierra 1500
While the loss of this feature may be a blow to some GMC fans, the 2022 Sierra 1500 is still a competent truck. The basic version of the work truck starts at a relatively affordable price of about $34,500. It comes with a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and gets 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. With this base engine, the Sierra can tow up to 9,600 pounds.
However, like the Silverado, there was a major upgrade to the Sierra’s interior, but mostly because of the equipment options. The standard Sierra still has an average touchscreen, but the higher trims get a 12.3-inch digital meter cluster display and a 13.4-inch horizontal touchscreen. That’s a larger touch screen than what other full-size pickup trucks will offer. Another upgrade is in tech, as GMC has given the new Sierra access to GM’s Super Cruise feature.
