GM's employee benefits now include transgender medical procedures and add coverage for unmarried and same-sex partners

General Motors model family is diverse and includes everything from city cars to electric super trucks, and new changes to the benefits package recognize that workers’ families are equally diverse.

GM salaried employees can now add domestic same-sex partners and their children, or unmarried opposite-sex partners and their children, to their health plans. And transgender GM employees now have access to medical procedures, including voice modification and facial feminization treatments.

“Looking at family dynamics, we want to make sure that the benefits we provide to workers reflect today’s households and meet their needs,” a GM spokesperson told the GM. Detroit Free Press. “Employee feedback has led us to extend the benefits for domestic partners. This is an important step towards that vision of greater inclusion and advancing equality within our workforce and their families.”

While this is great news for GM employees and their families who were previously ineligible for health insurance, the benefits are not unique, even among automakers. Both Stellantis and Ford already offers similar coverage, and GM’s announcement is all about recruiting and retaining the best talent in the industry.

The coverage only applies to GM’s salaried employees and not to the hourly workers, because those benefits are negotiated with the UAW, according to the same report, adding that an employee who wants a health package for themselves plus spouse and children may required to contribute between $60 and $540 per month. The cost is the same for both married and unmarried families.

Of course there are costs associated with GM and other car manufacturers like Ford when? Making benefits more inclusive, but extending coverage to unmarried and same-sex partners doesn’t necessarily have to burden companies with huge extra bills. One reason for that is that, according to Gallup data, only 7 percent of adults in the US live together but are not married, and another is that an increase in that number is likely to be accompanied by a corresponding decrease in the number of people getting married. .
