Lando Norris explains where Mercedes has the 'best car'

McLaren driver Lando Norris has explained where Mercedes has the ‘best car’ on the grid, despite the team’s ongoing struggles into the 2022 season.

The eight-time consecutive Constructors’ champion has been unable to keep up with rivals Red Bull and Ferrari this season, with Mercedes facing numerous ‘porpoises’ since the recent rule changes.

Lewis Hamilton has struggled particularly, finishing behind teammate George Russell in each of the last four races, with both drivers critical of the vehicle they’ve been given and pushing for improvements – with an upgrade package being introduced for the upcoming Barcelona Grand Prix .

Despite all these issues, however, Norris has stated that Mercedes has one of the ‘best cars on the grid’ when it comes to mastering low-speed corners when speaking after the Miami Grand Prix.

“This track has a lot of slow corners and Mercedes has been one of the best cars on the low speed starting grid since day one. I think they just figured out a little bit more this weekend and maximized their car’s potential a little bit more, so I’m not surprised,” he said told RacingNews365.

“It’s been the same in Formula 1 for years, some weekends your car fits one track and other times it fits another car.”

McLaren has also had a mixed bag so far, with Norris retiring over the Miami weekend after a collision with Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo who finished 13th to finish outside the points, making it difficult to predict the fate of the team in Barcelona.

“By [the] Barcelona pre-season testing, I want to say it’s a little more hopeful. Hopefully we can at least make some improvements to the car.”

Norris is currently seventh in the Driver’s Championship, just one point behind seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, but well behind the leaders – although he is 25 points more than teammate Daniel Ricciardo.

Meanwhile, McLaren is fourth in the Constructor’s Championship and Mercedes has 49 points in the battle for the ‘best of the rest’ tag.
