UPPER ST. CLAIR, Dad. (KDKA) — A man is dead after a tree fell on cars during Tuesday’s storm in Upper St. Clair.
The tree came down on McMurray Road. A family of six escaped unharmed, but the man was taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died, according to police.
The man whose family ran away said he and his family were sitting just before the red light when the tree fell. The roof of his car was dented, but he said it was terrifying not to know if the power lines would allow them to get out safely.
Employees at nearby Sunoco said the damage could have been more extensive had the tree not hit their awning first. They think it may have been a light impact that cut the tree down in an instant.
“I’ve never experienced anything like this. The wind was so calm and it came out of nowhere. If it was worse and nobody was here, it could have caused an explosion, but thank goodness it didn’t,” said a Sunoco employee.
McMurray Road from Johnston Road to Country Club Drive will remain closed until crews can safely clear all debris.
Upper St. Clair Township officials said they will continue to update drivers in the area on the progress of the cleanup.
