May 2022 car sales saw a healthy increase in sales for automakers, with most showing good year-over-year growth. Sales showed that demand for SUVs increased while hatchbacks continued to lead sales and Tata Motors surpassed Hyundai to become the second largest automaker in India.
Also, in May 2022, commercial tricycles saw EVs outsell ICE vehicles – a first for the Indian industry. Let’s take a look at the best-selling car models for each manufacturer in May 2022, along with the numbers sold last month, and compare them to May 2021 sales.
India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling model in May 2022 was the Wagon R hatchback. Maruti Suzuki sold 16,814 units in May 2022, compared to 2,086 units in May 2021, a 706% year-over-year growth. The Wagon R has been one of Maruti’s best-selling cars for many years and its redesigned design has helped the Wagon R lead the way in sales.
India’s second largest automaker in May was Tata Motors, surpassing Hyundai. For Tata Motors, the Nexon has been the best-selling model for a while and in May 2022 it was no different. Tata Motors sold 14,614 units of the Nexon, up 127 percent year-over-year.
Hyundai India lost its position to Tata Motors in sales last month, but the automaker may regain it after recently launching the new Hyundai Venue. However, the best-selling model for the South Korean automaker in May 2022 was the Hyundai Creta, with 10,973 units sold compared to 7,527 units in May 2021, a 46 percent year-on-year growth.
The Mahindra Bolero has been one of the company’s best-selling models since its launch many years ago. The Bolero has received minor but noticeable design and mechanical upgrades over the years to keep the SUV relevant to the times. In May 2022, the Bolero was the best-selling Mahindra vehicle, with 8,767 units and a year-over-year growth of 149 percent.
For Honda, the Amaze was the best-seller in May 2022, with sales of 3,709 units compared to 478 units in May 2021. This is an annual growth rate of 676 percent. Interestingly, in May 2021 the best-selling Honda was the City, while in May 2022 the mid-sized sedan had to settle for second place.
Hyundai’s sister company, Kia, made an impressive debut in India with the Seltos, which quickly delivered sales. Later, Kia launched the Sub-4 meter Sonet, which quickly became the best seller for Kia in India. In May 2022, Kia sold 7,899 Sonet in India, compared to 6,627 in May 2021, a 19 percent year-on-year growth.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) currently sells three models in India, all under the Jeep brand after Fiat pulled its plugs in India. FCA’s models include the Jeep Wrangler, its most affordable offering, the Compass and the recently launched Meridian. While the seven-seater Meridian is new and the Wrangler’s high price tag in May 2022 hasn’t convinced people yet, the Compass is the best-seller, with 928 units sold and 95 percent YoY growth.
MG India offers three SUVs and one electric crossover and among them the new Astor will become the best seller in May 2022 with 2,022 units sold. Last May, however, the Hector was the best-seller as the Astor was recently introduced to the market and the Hector achieved 33 percent YoY growth, finishing in second place in May 2022.
Nissan India currently offers two models for India, the Kicks and the Magnite, both SUVs. Nissan (Datsun) pulled the plug on the Go, Go+ and Redi-Go in India when Datsun packed its bags after poor sales. In May 2022, the Magnite was the best-seller, with 1,920 units, compared to 1,200 in May 2021, with an annual growth rate of 60 percent.
French carmaker Renault offers three vehicles in India, the Kwid hatchback, the Triber seven-seater MPV and the Kiger sub-4 meter SUV. In May, the best-selling Renault was the Triber, with sales of 2,110 units and growth of 303%.
Skoda’s latest offering for India, the Slavia, is the automaker’s best-selling model in May 2022, with 2,466 units sold. The next bestseller is also a recent launch, the Kushaq SUV, followed by the Superb, Kodiaq and the Octavia for Skoda.
Volkswagen made the bold decision to discontinue its bestseller in India, the Polo, in April this year, and by the time enthusiasts could get over it, VW announced the launch of the Virtus, which immediately took the top spot in May 2022 with sales of 2,177 units.
Toyota’s best-selling car in May 2022 is not a Toyota, but a Maruti Suzuki. The Urban Cruiser was the bestseller for the Japanese automaker and through its partnership with Suzuki, the redesigned Brezza achieved 3,128 units for the automaker and registered 739 percent year-on-year growth. The second best-selling model for Toyota is also a Maruti, the Glanza.
