NASCAR Disqualifies First Two Cars, Chase Elliott Is Pocono Winner

NASCAR Cup Series Ambetter 301 - Qualifying

NASCAR has stated Chase Elliot the winner of Sunday’s cup race after the cars of the two best finishers, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Buschfailed post-race inspection.

Joe Gibbs Racing can appeal the penalty. NBC Sports has contacted a spokesperson for the team.

NASCAR found a problem with the front of both cars and stated that there was material that should not have been there.

Cup Series director Brad Moran told the media in Pocono that the matter discovered “vehicle aero” effects.

He also said that “there’s really no reason why there was material that was somewhere it shouldn’t have been. That actually comes down to a DQ.”

Moran said NASCAR would bring both vehicles to the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina.

NASCAR said it could not go into many details because the fine could be appealed.

It is the first time this season that a cup winner has been disqualified.

The announcement was made about two hours after Hamlin crossed the finish line for Busch.
