Nothing good comes from drifting cars and reckless driving

A Sun-Times story last week quoted a spectator at a car-driving event as saying that those who participate in these illegal activities are not “bad people.” If that’s true, why did a driver choose not to show his face in a photo and use the alias “Draco”? Draco says that urges gives him an adrenaline rush.

Well, his selfish adrenaline rush is harmful. It causes air and noise nuisance and has a negative impact on the residents of neighborhoods where street takeovers take place. I can’t sleep with my windows open because of the sound of engines running as the cars fly through the streets. So I keep my air conditioning on, burn more fossil fuels and burden the environment.

Being reckless behind the wheel is never a good idea. In September, a driver lost control of the car and hit a 24-hour restaurant on the streets of Chicago and Orleans, severely damaging the building and injuring four people. Fortunately, no one was killed, but it took months to restore the building.

Then, last weekend, a Florida woman was apparently killed by a drag racer. It’s only a matter of time before one of these bums lose control and kill another person. And the bums and onlookers disrespect the police, throwing objects at officers and damaging patrol vehicles. The cost of these auto repairs will eventually come out of taxpayers’ pockets.

The bums and their fans are bad people as far as I’m concerned.

I know I’m not alone when I say arrest these people and impound their vehicles. We’re tired of their “we just want a nice adrenaline rush” attitude that infringes on the rest of us.

Republicans have the Kool-Aid. drunk

You don’t have to be a Democrat to protest those who call themselves Republicans in Congress — as President Joe Biden did Tuesday — for refusing to condemn the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol and then defaming the FBI for raiding Donald Trump’s Florida Residence to recover sensitive documents he should never have taken with him when he left the White House.

Those of us who have respected what Republican has traditionally stood for have wondered how so many could have been drinking Trumpist Kool-Aid to so completely oppose the acceptance of fair elections, keep the government out of the most personal decisions, and to support institutions that protect our democracy, all to promote the agenda of a peddler who cares about nothing but trying to stay in power.
