A state police officer was hospitalized in northwest Indiana after being trapped between a car and a barrier.

It happened around 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 on I-80/94 near Calumet Avenue when a driver, Bryan Smith, crashed his car into a fire truck and a nearby Subaru, which shifted and held the officer.

The crash not only injured the officer and Smith, but also a passenger in Smith’s car. After the crash, Smith tried to flee, but some Good Samaritans blocked him with their vehicle.

One of the Good Samaritans, who was armed with a pistol, drew his weapon and ordered Smith to stop.

No word on the passenger’s condition, but the officer is fine.

Smith is currently in prison.
