Tesla Model Y topped the list of best-selling cars in Europe in September, and the electric SUV might stay there for a while.
Over the years, Tesla vehicles have often become the best-selling vehicles in certain European markets.
Until now, however, it has never topped the list of best-selling cars on the entire European continent.
Reuters announced that the achievement was based on new vehicle registration data released by JATO Dynamics:
This is the first time Tesla’s SUV has topped the ranking in Europe, London-based JATO Dynamics said on Wednesday, as 29,367 Model Y cars were registered last month, up 227% from last year.
The Tesla Model Y took the top spot from the Peugeot 208, which came in second, and Renault’s Dacia Sandero took third in September’s best-selling car ranking. Both vehicles are also much cheaper than Tesla’s electric SUV.
The electric SUV was able to take the top spot thanks to increased availability thanks to Tesla ramping up production at Gigafactory Berlin.
Tesla confirmed that Gigafactory has reached Berlin a production rate of 2,000 Model Y vehicles in a week end of September. Those Model Y SUVs are shallow for European markets, and Tesla continues to import more Model Y vehicles into Europe from China.
Now that it’s taken the top spot, I think the Tesla Model Y could hold it for a while.
Tesla’s production rate of 2,000 units per week was only reached at the end of September and therefore only affects deliveries in the fourth quarter.
Those vehicles are part of Tesla’s additional ~20,000 vehicles in transit at the end of the quarter.
Also, Tesla doesn’t stop at 2,000 vehicles a week. The automaker plans to ramp up production at Gigafactory Berlin to 5,000 Model Ys per week, which should significantly improve availability and wait times in Europe.
If demand continues, Model Y should have no problem staying at the top of the list of best-selling cars in Europe and maybe soon for the whole world.
