Tesla Model Y becomes world’s best-selling car

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the Model Y is on track to become the world’s best-selling car by 2023. According to the American automaker, the electric SUV is already the best-selling car in the world right now, but soon the Toyota Corolla will also take the title for best-selling by volume once its Gigafactories open in Texas and Berlin, boosting production for 2023. The two plants will focus solely on producing Model Y EVs, and Tesla says it will be able to produce one million a year by the end of 2022.

The new numbers come two years after Model Y made its debut and appear to confirm Musk’s predictions at the time of launch. In 2020, the tech mogul predicted that the SUV would double the Model 3, which at the time was already the best-selling EV in the world. As early as 2016, Musk said Tesla could be selling between 500,000 and a million Model Y vehicles a year, and his forecasts appear to be quite accurate six years later.

Elsewhere in the auto industry, the Lucid Air is getting a $6,000 USD stealth trim.
