2023 Toyota Sequoia Vs. 2023 GMC Yukon: Performance and Capabilities

With this generation update, the new Sequoia ditched the older model’s V8 petrol engine for a much more fuel-efficient V6 powertrain. Part of Toyota’s i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain, this new 3.4-liter engine generates 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque on its own. Combined with the electric motor, the total system power of this setup stands at 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. As standard, all versions of this SUV are equipped with two-wheel drive with the optional availability of four-wheel drive. The only exception is the TRD Pro which gets four-wheel drive as standard. This quality also comes with off-road goodies, such as Fox shocks, skid plates, a rear differential and off-road-specific rider aids. In addition, the new Sequoia can tow up to 9,000 pounds.

Unlike the Sequoia, the 2023 Yukon does not come with a hybrid powertrain. Instead, this full-size SUV comes with a 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine that produces 277 horsepower along with 490 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the Yukon will also receive two petrol engines. There is a 3.5-liter V8 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. And a 6.2-liter V8 engine that delivers 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. All these engines come standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The options for two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive depend on the chosen version. The Yukon also comes with an off-road specific grade known as the AT4. In addition to the standard 4WD, it gets special off-road upgrades such as all-terrain tires, skid plates, air suspension to raise the ride height and some driver assistance systems. The Yukon can tow up to 8,400 pounds.

2023 Toyota Sequoia Vs. 2023 GMC Yukon: Fuel Savings

In addition to increasing the capacity of the Sequoia 2023, the new hybrid powertrain has dramatically improved its fuel efficiency figures. EPA rates the two-wheel drive versions of this SUV at 21 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. On the other hand, the all-wheel drive versions are rated by EPA to deliver 19 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway.

As expected, the GMC Yukon’s two petrol V8s aren’t as frugal. The 3.5-liter and 6.5-liter engines are rated at 15 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway, according to EPA. That said, the 3.0-litre diesel engine shines in this SUV’s lineup in terms of delivering decent fuel economy. EPA rates this as 20 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway.

2023 Toyota Sequoia Vs. 2023 GMC Yukon: Interior and Features

With this generation update, the Sequoia’s interior has also undergone a major transformation. Not only does it get better quality materials, but it also features improved connectivity options. Depending on the chosen version, this SUV will have a cloth-covered cabin or a leather-covered cabin. Three-row seats are standard, with a choice of captain’s seats for the middle row. Unfortunately, the hybrid system’s batteries placed under the third row somewhat hinder the payload of the luggage, reducing it to just 12 cubic feet with all rows up. Where this vehicle reclaims itself is in the infotainment department, thanks to its massive 14-inch touchscreen display. It not only offers wireless connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but also supports voice commands.

GMC has left no stone unturned in offering a luxurious interior to the Yukon. Aside from the base SLE, all Yukon models feature leather trim. The Denali and the recently released Denali Ultimate versions further enhance the luxury features of this SUV with a host of premium features. The Yukon comes with a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system. In addition to offering connectivity options for mobile devices, it also comes with Google built-in. The Yukon is also a practical vehicle, with a storage capacity of 25 cubic meters with all rows up. This extends to 41 cu-ft in the Yukon XL.
