To meet the changing demands of American drivers, compact pickup trucks are back, and they’ve evolved. If medium truck models such as the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger expanded, as did their awards.
Smaller compact pickups can now fill the gap left by their larger counterparts on the market. The first vehicles to fill that void are the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Ford’s most recent pickup, the 2022 Maverick, has revived a name from its somewhat forgotten 1970s little car. The Ford Maverick is a compact pickup truck that runs under the Ranger and the F-150. in the company’s portfolio. Ford based it on the Ford Escape small SUV (which also provides the architecture for the Bronco Sport).
The Ford Maverick nevertheless has some excellent towing capabilities, despite having a different unibody design from the traditional body-on-frame structure of the Ranger and F-150.
In addition, it is less expensive and smaller than its bigger brothers. As a result, the Maverick is a sensible choice if you want the adaptability of a pickup, but don’t need all the capabilities of a medium or large car.

The Ford Maverick has a striking interior
The interior of the Ford Maverick is both practical and attractive. The two-tone, durable fabric seats have contrasting stitching.
There are leather options, including a dark gray design with caramel accents. The dashboard has a stone-like appearance that is intended to simulate a solid table top. Even for tall people, the front and back rows have plenty of head and legroom.
The Maverick double cab, which seats five, has plenty of clever storage spaces in both the front and back rows. Ford made the door armrests so that a one-liter water bottle could stand upright without touching them. A tablet or notepad can fit in the spacious door compartments.
There are two large storage compartments that are accessible when you fold down the rear seats. You can use them as a place to store small items out of sight and they are big enough for certain sports equipment. The battery pack in hybrid variants occupies one of the storage areas.
There is also the FITS (Ford integrated mounting system) if you need more specialized storage options. The rear of the center console also has a storage compartment.
This is compatible with an optional accessory pack that includes cup holders, a double hook for groceries and a cord organizer. One can use this in the future to house their own 3D printed DIY goods.
With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Ford Maverick’s 8-inch touchscreen is well equipped for 2022. FordPass Connectwhich has a built-in modem, and Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices are both included as standard.
The Ford Maverick is currently the most fuel-efficient pickup truck
The Maverick is the first pickup in America with a standard hybrid powertrain, as Ford soon notices. The base vehicle has a hybrid system that combines an electric motor and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to deliver 191 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque.
Ford set a target of 40 mpg in the city and 500 miles of range with this combination of a CVT automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. They even topped it with the Maverick’s official EPA rating of 42 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. It’s off the market most economical pick-up truck as result.
However, it is not the fastest; acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 7.6 seconds. Ford is here for you if you want a little more power and capability.
One can also buy the Maverick with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine that produces 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and is available with AWD and FWD. The EPA rates fuel economy as 22/29 mpg for AWD and 23/30 mpg for FWD.
The Ford Maverick can’t pull a big load
The 2022 Ford Maverick was not designed to pull a heavy load. Models with hybrid engines have a pull of 2,000 pounds, which is below average.
The pickup’s towing capacity increases to 4,000 pounds when Ford adds the turbocharged engine, although certain drivers still want a truck with more horsepower. The Ford Ranger is a better alternative because it has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.
Sadly, the 2022 Ford Maverick won’t offer a hybrid powertrain with the AWD
Those who live in America’s Snowbelt may consider an AWD system essential. Unfortunately, front-wheel drive is standard on any Maverick powered by a hybrid.
Buyers must select the truck’s turbo engine to have four-wheel drive. And while the Maverick’s turbocharged engine has tremendous power, some consumers end up appreciating the hybrid powertrain’s significant fuel economy.
