It’s fair to say that Mercedes-AMG’s decision to drop a next-generation C 63 V8 and replace it with a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid left many people on the wrong track. Anyone watching this video may feel their disappointment growing.

The Mercedes-AMG C 63 has long been one of the automaker’s best-sounding models. The 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 used by the W204-generation model certainly sounded the best, but even when the W205 model was downsized to a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, AMG engineers were able to give it a resounding soundtrack. The same cannot be said about the 2023 model.

A handful of prototypes were recently spied on near and on the Nürburgring and it would be an understatement to describe the car’s sound as ‘muffled’. Much of the video shows the C 63 cruising, but at the moments the throttle is opened the car still doesn’t make any engine or exhaust noises that are even slightly exciting.

What the new C 63 lacks in sound, it has to make up for in performance. Indeed, Mercedes-AMG has already confirmed that the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will partner with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to deliver 464 horsepower. To give the sedan some extra spice, an electric motor with 198 hp is supplied. The car will also come exclusively with a rear-facing 4Matic system and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Drivetrain aside, the new C63 is going to be a decent look. It will come with revised front and rear and benefit from flared wheel arches. The rear of this prototype looks particularly mean thanks to the angular taillights and the pronounced diffuser. The characteristic AMG quadruple tailpipes are also visible.

Mercedes-Benz will sell the new C 63 in sedan and station wagon form, but it’s unclear whether current coupe and convertible variants will carry over to the next-generation model.
