The seventh generation BMW The 7 Series has a radical new look, a high-tech interior and, for the first time, the option of an electric motor. The updated 7 Series will hit showrooms later this year as a 2023 model, with prices starting at $94,295 plus a $995 destination surcharge. Only three classes will be offered, including an electrified version called the i7 xDrive60, which will be a flagship. The 740i and 760i xDrive are mild hybrid systems and will be offered as internal combustion models. The inside, with a large retractable screen with 8K resolution for the rear passengers and an equally large driver display with full functionality, redefines luxury.
The 2023 7 Series delivers a new design language for the brand, with a unique front end and a host of modern amenities, such as a theater-style screen and hands-free driver assistance on the highway. It is also part of BMW’s growing line of electric vehicles, which currently includes an EV variant called the i7.
BMW 7 Series: the ultimate luxury sedan
BMW is designing the 7 Series based on a flexible vehicle architecture that can accommodate a variety of powertrains, ranging from traditional petrol and diesel engines to plug-in hybrid systems and the all-electric i7. The new lineup features several engine options and is built on an improved version of the previous model’s CLAR architecture. Vehicle is 5.1 inches longer, 1.9 inches wider and 2.0 inches taller than its predecessor, with a 0.2-inch wheelbase. As a result, luggage capacity grew by about a cubic foot.
This car has a sculpted, hard-edged look that is consistent with previous all-electric BMWs such as the iX SUV. The kidney grille has been enlarged to unpleasant dimensions and the outside of each opening can now be illuminated, attracting even more attention. The split headlights give the car a beautiful look. The low beam and high beam are housed in those lower components; adaptive LED lights with bend lighting and automatic high beam are standard across the range. The higher housings house the daytime running lights and, at an additional cost, perhaps adorned with Swarovski crystal embellishments illuminated by 22 LED units.
The BMW 7 Series is a theater on wheels
The interior design has been significantly improved, with a similar style to the iX electric SUV and using exotic materials such as open-pored wood and accessible cashmere. The interior of the 7 Series also includes an incredible number of technological elements, including display panels and tablet control interfaces for both the front and rear occupants. Electrically operated doors are also offered as an option. The optional 31.0-inch BMW Theater Screen extends from the ceiling to provide a cinematic experience for rear seat passengers.
The interior is more luxurious than in previous versions. The driver is confronted with a 12.3-inch digital display for the instrument cluster, which then connects to a second 14.9-inch display for the infotainment, all enclosed in a curved floating panel. Amazon Fire TV is incorporated in the offered 31-inch screen with 8K resolution. As BMW calls it, the Augmented View is a notable feature of the cab. This feature displays a live video stream of the front view through the instrument panel, but overlaid with key information such as navigation directions and even local parking restrictions. In addition to voice activation and tactile buttons, gesture control is also included. BMW enlisted famed Hollywood musician Hans Zimmer to compose some of the new car’s sounds.
Vegan leather comfort seats are standard in the interior, with multifunction seats available for active seat ventilation with optimized cooling and a nine-program messaging function. BMW Individual Merino leather/cashmere wool is now available together with the vegan alternative. There is Bowers & Wilkins surround sound in the rear doors and a 5.5-inch touch-activated function. This luxury vehicle is essentially a mobile cinema.
Three alternative powertrains for the 7 Series
When it comes to powertrains, customers still have several options. There are inline six and V8 gas engines, the electric i7 and the 750e plug-in hybrid. The 740i is the entry-level model, with a 375 hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six and rear-wheel drive, while the V8 7 Series is now known as the 760i and comes only with xDrive four-wheel drive. Its twin-turbocharged V8 engine has the same displacement of 4.4 liters as the previous 750i, but it now produces 536 HP which is 13 HP higher†
Finally, the new i7 xDrive60 includes a pair of electric motors made without the use of rare earth minerals, making them more environmentally friendly. The i7’s front alternator produces 255 horsepower and the rear engine produces 308 horsepower, for a total of 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft. torque at a speed of 0 to 60 of about 4.5 seconds. The car’s floor-mounted battery pack has a usable capacity of 101.7 kilowatt hours, which is sufficient for the manufacturer’s claimed range of 300 miles on the EPA test cycle.
The 740i and 760i xDrive versions come standard with an M Sport package, which is also available for free on the i7 xDrive60. This includes a striking front end, additional cosmetic changes and 20- or 21-inch wheels. The new 7 Series is available with an M Sport Professional option, with upgraded brakes, a discreet rear spoiler and black trim on the grille. The 740i and 760i xDrive are available in non-metallic and ten metallic finishes. Finally, the 760 is available in three new metallic colors and a variety of two-tone finishes from the BMW Individual range.
