Mercedes-Benz has already taken the third rail of luxury by converting the S-Class to electric drive; you’ve probably seen the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS and its AMG EQS upgrade. But what will happen now that it has ditched its benchmark midsize sedan in the same EV pocket?
The Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 will be the companion of the E-electric class in 2023. It has a similar battery, a single electric motor, a scaled down EQS design and options like the Hyperscreen control interface and rear axle steering† It will need them as it competes with rival EVs with greater range and acceleration, such as the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air, as well as domestic rivals such as the Audi E-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan.
Speed, power and performance: the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ comes with an exceptional powertrain as standard
The Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ is equipped with an electric powertrain (eATS) consisting of a single Permanently Excited Synchronous Motor (PSM) on the rear axle and a single-speed gearbox. The engine produces 288 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque (the EQE 500 4MATIC, due later this year, has two motors and 402 horsepower). The benchmark 0-60 mph sprint takes about six seconds, and the vehicle will be electronically limited to 130 mph – these performance figures are identical to those of the internal combustion engine E350.
The EQE 350+ drives with the refinement and refinement long associated with the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. The German car manufacturer has been producing vehicles for almost 140 years, dating back to the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, demonstrating its technical experience and prowess.
The engine’s torque launches the EQE quickly, despite its curb weight of over 5,200 pounds, and acceleration from a standstill is strong – always an EV force. Inserting into traffic and passing slower vehicles is a breeze as there is no need to wait for an engine or transmission to reach the correct speed or gear. Mercedes offers a variety of driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual) and regeneration modes ranging from hyper-efficient to sporty via DYNAMIC SELECT – it would be hard to find one that doesn’t suit the needs (or mood of the driver).
The chassis appears to be cut from a single bar of alloy – stiff and stiff – and provides an excellent platform for the four-link front and multi-link rear suspension – bumps and harshness are non-existent. Mercedes also offers its excellent AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS+ adaptive damping, which enhances the ride for the most demanding occupants. The cabin is whisper-quiet thanks to impressive aerodynamics (the EQE has a drag coefficient of just 0.22 making it one of the smoothest vehicles on the road), with only a distant gust of wind perceptible over the glass.
The EQE 350+ is a dynamic luxury sedan that prefers to pamper and isolate its passengers rather than exposing them to real irregularities. The steering is tuned for isolation rather than road feel, and the suspension is tuned for comfort rather than razor-sharp turn-in. The vehicle is very stable when cornering thanks to a low center of gravity, but ultimate lateral grip is limited by low rolling resistance tires and the vehicle weight exceeds two tons. Optional rear-axle steering offers up to 10 degrees of rear steering, which improves maneuverability and maneuverability in almost any driving situation (we highly recommend it). Despite the pedal feel a bit synthetic, the braking system is powerful and the energy regeneration system is refined and seamless.
The design of the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ from 2023 remains practically exceptional
In terms of design, the EQE has not broken new ground. It delegated most of the work to the EQS, which debuted last year. Inside and out, the EQE is reminiscent of the EQS, but the headlamps have different LED daytime running lights that are more similar to the E-Class than the S-Class. While the EQE retains the forward-facing design with a short hood, short rear deck and long cab of the EQS, the wheelbase is 3.5 inches shorter with an overall length that matches that of the current CLS-Class. The signature black noseband at the front, as well as the full-width taillights, contribute with an EQE distinctive treatment.
The EQE interior is similar to that of the EQS, but is dazzling even in standard mode. A 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment system complements the standard 12.3-inch digital meter cluster. Optional features include a 56-inch Hyperscreen dashboard with a single window, a 17.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch passenger touchscreen. The Hyperscreen’s glorious chaos is muffled by the smaller screen arrangement, but this works in the EQE’s favor: it reveals square feet of dashboard trim, which in our test car emphasized laser-cut wood with light blue windows. In both cases, nightclub-style LED lighting is standard.

Every Mercedes-Benz safety and driver assistance system, from automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control to blind spot monitors and active lane control, will be available on the EQE. It also has car-to-X communication and can communicate with other vehicles about driving conditions.
The EQE is so helpful that it feels more like the precursor to a truly immersive driver assistance experience than anything else we’ve tried. It assists with everything from the automatic stops it performs at traffic lights, to the brake lever it releases when the light changes, and from cruise control that respects city speed limits up to 35 mph with stop-and-go control. It has active steering assist to keep you centered in the lane, as well as active lane change and blind spot steering to protect you from oncoming traffic.
In addition, it also helps in areas other than safety. The EQE has a host of environmental aids that merge the cockpit into a cohesive zone where the driver needs fewer buttons to get behind the wheel in comfort. Voice commands can change the color of the dashboard light pipes: “Hey Mercedes, change the lights to white”, hear it and do it. It is not without flaws in the execution. The speedometer is too high on the digital instrument panel, forcing some tall drivers to choose a higher helm position than they would like.
