This Custom Boxster Is The 986 Spyder Porsche Never Built

For three of the four generations of the Porsche Boxster, Porsche is offering the car as a special edition “Spyder” model. This variant was never offered for the first generation 986 Boxster, but that didn’t stop some people from making their own. One of those cars has since been put up for sale on Cars & Bidsand it seems to be quite a treat.

The car features a 986 Spyder conversion kit from TuneRS Motorsports, which gives it a beautiful double hump rear deck lid, though at the cost of a much more complex convertible experience. For those unfamiliar, compared to the Boxster’s power-operated soft top, the Spyder’s roof not only opens and closes manually, but also requires the additional task of attaching the flying buttresses.

Other visual upgrades include 18-inch wheels from a Cayman S offset by 12mm wheel spacers, LED headlights, TuneRS side skirts, an “RS Spyder” front splitter and rear diffuser, Euro-spec taillights, and a rear wing and bumper removal. Inside, the car features a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a B&M short shift lever with an aftermarket button for the five-speed manual transmission and red gauges to match the convertible top.

As much as we’ve talked about this Boxster’s aesthetic, the changes are more than skin-deep. The car is powered by a 2.7-liter flat-six with 217 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque, which will likely get some gains from a Dansk exhaust system and high-flow catalytic converters. In addition to the engine upgrades, the car also features a KW V1 coilover and TuneRS brake calipers to improve driving dynamics.
