This is why the BMW iX 2022 is the best luxury electric SUV on the market

In March 2022, BMW launched the all-new all-electric SUV: the BMW iX. With a completely new style, power, speed and superior technology, the BMW iX reaches new heights in the 2022 electric SUV market. The stylish SUV is available in the xDrive40 (not in the US) and the xDrive50.

For 2022, the BMW iX will compete against the likes of the Audi E-Tron and the Tesla Model X. To keep up with the competition, the new BMW iX can take you up to 500 miles on a full charge, and its double electric motors deliver up to 516 horsepower. Although, starting at $83,200, the BMW iX xDrive50 is one of the most expensive luxury electric SUVs in its class. But there is so much value in this BMW EV.

The 2022 BMW iX has a powerful drivetrain and a long range

Both the 2022 iX xDrive40 and 2022 iX xDrive50 BMW utilize BMW’s latest powertrain technology, the Gen5 electric drive unit. Each drive unit is equipped on both axles and consists of an electric motor, single-speed gearbox and all necessary electronics.

With two electric motors, this BMW iX delivers a total power of 516 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque, taking the electric SUV to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, according to BMW.

This time BMW is taking things up a notch with energy storage. The 2022 BMW iX comes with a 111.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, which by default is the largest battery ever made by the BMW brand. This larger battery has many advantages. One is that it allows a range of 300+ and the other that, despite its capacity, it also wants to get you back on the road as quickly as possible. Quick charge of the battery with a power of 195 kW for 10 minutes gives a range of 90 miles. DC fast charging for about 40 minutes should fill the battery from 10 to 80 percent full, which is absolutely impressive. With 11 kW Level 2 charging, you can charge the battery from zero to 100 percent in approximately 11 hours.

In its dimensions, the iX largely resembles most SUVs in the BMW line. It has a similar length and width to the X5 medium crossover. In height it is very similar to the X6 sibling and in wheel size it matches the X7.

The 2022 BMW iX has a beautiful and spacious interior

The iX has one of the most uniquely built and spacious interiors, which sets it apart from the BMW crossover SUV line. It shows off premium styling materials, such as crystallized knobs and matte wood trim. We especially love the leatherette seats, which feature a perforated Sensatec upholstery, which contributes to a more cushioned driving experience. For a more premium touch, BMW threw in an Oyster White finish.

The front cabin is expressive and exudes a sense of openness and freedom. While significantly smaller than say the Tesla Model X, the driver and front passenger have ample head and legroom, which is honestly the best in class. The rear cabin is also large and roomy, with ample head and legroom to comfortably accommodate above-average adults.

The panoramic glass roof, the first in its class, features Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology that provides electrochromic sun protection without a headliner. For more oomph, BMW offers an optional luxury package for $1,150. This unlocks an open-pored walnut center console, a volume wheel, glass knobs and dials for the iDrive button, and more.

The 2022 BMW iX is great for its easy-to-use and intuitive technical features

The BMW iX’s most attractive feature is the dashboard, which combines the 14.9-inch central infotainment system and multimedia screen with a 12.3-inch steering wheel information display, essentially turning it into one large, curved display. Like the i4 sedan, the BMW iX features the new iDrive 8 infotainment technology, the first car system to support 5G connectivity, paving the way for HD quality video streaming and hassle-free music streaming. BMW Group Sound Design also collaborated with renowned film composer and Academy Award winner, Hans Zimmer, to create unique sounds for the iX.

The two-spoke steering wheel comes with a few buttons that allow you to personalize screen options, switch between menus and layouts, navigate through the displays and switch between menus. The integrated maps can learn your driving habits and suggest you parking and charging station locations.

The 2022 BMW iX is an outstanding achiever

Inspired by its gas-powered SUV siblings, the BMW iX offers unparalleled ride quality. It glides smoothly and quietly on any road surface, thanks to the self-levelling suspension system, as well as the shock absorbers, which are made with a high level of hydraulic damping. For added driving efficiency, the vehicle is equipped with an adaptive four-wheel drive system that distributes torque evenly between the front and rear engines.

The iX also has a sound-absorbing interior, thanks to the well-designed doors and dashboard. So that tire, wind or road noise won’t be much of an issue. And thanks to the flexible suspension, you don’t feel much of the road or curb imperfections either.

And while heavy, it feels light when you’re behind the wheel. The strong engines do an exceptional job pulling the heavy SUV. Another notable factor about the iX is that it has a low center of gravity, which makes it less likely to tip, tilt or roll in a crash. This also affects acceleration, braking and cornering. So don’t expect it to tilt much, even in the most twisty corners.

Unlike most EVs, the BMW iX is equipped with a four-stage regenerative braking system, which adapts to the environment and gives you the choice between low, medium and high levels of regenerative braking – all easy to operate.
