However, it was again India’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki that dominated the list of the 10 best-selling cars in the country. Let’s take a look at India’s best-selling cars as of May 2022.

1) Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – 16,814 pieces
Maruti Suzukis sold 16,814 WagonR tall boy hatchbacks in May 2022. This was a huge 706 percent gain (14,702 units) compared to May 2021, when Maruti sold just 2,086 units of the Wagon R.

2) Tata Nexon – 14,614 units
May was a record month for both Tata Motors and the Nexon SUV. Tata had its best sales month for the Nexon, selling 14,614 units of the Nexon, which is offered in petrol, diesel and EV versions. In May, Tata also launched the new Nexon EV Max, an EV version of the SUV with a claimed range of 437km on a single charge. Sales of the Nexon increased 127 percent year-on-year compared to May 2021, when Tata sold just 6,439 units of the SUV.

3) Maruti Suzuki Swift – 14,133 units
The Maruti Suzuki Swift was back in the top 10 in May 2022 and the country’s largest automaker sold 14,133 units of the hatchback. Sales of the Swift increased by 102 percent (7,128 units) compared to the same period in 2021, when Maruti sold 7,005 units of the hatchback.

4) Maruti Suzuki Baleno – 13,970 units
The recently updated Baleno was another big winner in the month of May 2022, with Maruti Suzuki selling 13,970 units of its most premium hatchback in the Indian market. This was a 191 percent gain (9,167 units) from May 2021, when Maruti sold just 4,803 units of the Baleno.

5) Maruti Suzuki Alto – 12,933 units
The Maruti Suzuki Alto bounced back up in May, taking the 5th spot on our list. 12,933 units of the entry-level Alto hatchback hit our roads in May 2022. This was a 302 percent increase in sales (.713 units) compared to May 2021, when the pandemic caused only 3,220 units of the Alto to reach new homes.

6) Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – 12,226 units
Maruti launched the new facelifted Ertiga in May and the MPV continues to do well in the sales charts. Sales of the Ertiga grew 354 percent (9,532 units) in May 2022 compared to the same period last year, when Maruti sold just 2,694 units of the MPV.

7) Maruti Dzire – 11,603 units
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is the only sedan on this list. Maruti sold 11,603 units of the compact sedan under 4 meters in India. This was a 99 percent increase (5,784 units) from May 2021, when Maruti sold 5,819 units of the Dzire hatchback.

8) Hyundai Crete – 10,973 units
The Hyundai Creta is only the second non-Maruti vehicle on the list. South Korean automaker Hyundai sold 10,973 units of the Creta in May 2022, up 46 percent (3,3446 units) from the same month last year. In May 2021, Hyundai sold a total of 7,527 units.

9) Maruti Suzuki Eeco – 10,482 units
The Maruti Suzuki is the most popular new van sold in India today. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 10,482 units of the Eeco van in India last month. This was an 856 percent increase (9,386 units) from the same period last year, when Maruti sold just 1,096 units of the Eeco van.

10) Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza – 10,312 units
Maruti Suzuki is preparing the next-generation Vitara Brezza for launch at the end of June. Last month, Maruti sold 10,312 units of the Brezza SUV, an increase of 289 percent (7,664 units) from May 2021 sales figures for the Vitara Brezza. In May last year, Maruti sold 2,648 units of the Brezza.

The car market in India is still dominated by Maruti Suzuki and it is no surprise that the New Delhi-based carmaker takes 8 of the top 10 best-selling cars in the country. As the country recovers from the pandemic, we expect car sales to continue to pick up.
