The used car market is a very interesting place. In reality, it has always been interesting, but in today’s world it has undergone some pretty big changes. Thanks to the supply chain problem and a general price increase of just about everything in our daily lives, many special and/or unique cars have increased in value. Auction sites have also been opportunities for people who receive cars that are in high demand to sell them for a very high price. In any case, auction sites are always full of interesting and cool cars.
A major player in the auction site right now is Cars & Bids, which launched auto content creator Doug DeMuro in 2020. HotCars recently interviewed Doug about the site’s launch. Over the past few years it has grown into a highly competitive auction site, displaying some of the most unique cars, both new and old. To kick off the month of October, there is currently a good lineup of cool stuff on Cars & Bids.
5/5 Volvo 760 Turbo
We start with something unique. The Volvo 760 was one of the many stone-shaped station wagons offered by Volvo in the second half of the 20th century. They were all about safety and space, and they remain true automotive icons to this day. Old Volvos, such as the gearbox favorite 240 Turbo, and Volvo wagons are also excellent canvases for customization, but we’ve never seen one quite like this one. The standout feature of this 1987 760 Turbo wagon is its outer shell, seemingly inspired by the work of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.
It is certainly a very interesting look. An old Volvo car is nothing special to the casual passer-by, but many enthusiasts, especially those who love weird cars, will definitely notice old Volvos on the street. This 760 Turbo belonged to cheap car expert Tyler Hoover, and Cars & Bids is offering it without reserve. From 1992 to 2015, it was southern maintained, which should mean no rust. The (rear) wheels are powered by a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder, four-speed manual transmission, and it has 172,500 miles on the odometer, with a recent tire change and engine oil and filter changes.
4/5 Mercedes Benz SL500 (R129)
The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is one of the most iconic models the three-pointed star has ever made, and we absolutely love it. A beautiful two-door convertible cruiser, with a big powerful engine under the hood, and RWD for good measure. Most people agree that the top model of the SL-Class was the R129 generation, which Mercedes offered from 1989 to 2002. The top model of the R129 itself has to be the SL500, and this is a fantastic, virtually unblemished example of the breed.
This particular R129 is from the 1997 model year and it is an SL500, meaning it uses the most desirable powertrain: the 5.0-liter M119 V8. In this application, the V8 makes 315 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque, pretty healthy numbers for a relatively lightweight vehicle. That power turns the rear wheels through a proven five-speed automatic transmission. This SL is very clean and well maintained with only 59,800 miles on it. The owner has also maintained it regularly, with recent replacements to the battery and hydraulic cylinders on the convertible top.
3/5 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Ute Conversion
After incredibly high demand, and the arrival of Gran Turismo and the fast saga In the early 2000s, which completely fueled the popularity of import tuners, Subaru finally began offering their Impreza WRX STI in North America, starting with the 2003 model year. Around this time, Subaru also offered the Baja, which was essentially an Outback with part of the roof turned into a truck bed.
While you could get that car with a turbo engine and a manual transmission, it wasn’t quite the full STI experience. The owner of this STD decided to do something about it. The starting point here was a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, which fans call the “Hawkeye” because of the shape of the headlights. The Smyth ute conversion chops off the back doors and replaces everything behind the front doors with a pull-out bed. The custom Fifteen52 wheels nicely complement the silver paint finish. This STI has over 170,000 miles on it but has a clean New York title and spent most of its time in California. Like most STDs, this one has also been modified.
2/5 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
The most recent Shelby GT500 is certainly an honor for the legendary Carroll Shelby. All of Ford’s expertise came together to create what most people believe is the best handling, best performing Mustang of all time, in just about every category. It really is a supercar in disguise. It’s unlikely we’ll ever see a car like this again, and combined with all the hurdles the auto industry is currently facing, the GT500 is in pretty high demand.
This 2021 GT500 is probably one of the best examples we’ve seen. First off, it only has 1700 miles, so barely broken in. More importantly, though, it has all the bells and whistles. The full Carbon Fiber Track Pack, including the large rear wing and those carbon fiber wheels, the Technology Package and the Magneride adaptive dampers. As a refresher, the GT500 uses a 5.2-liter supercharged “Predator” V8 that delivers 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque, all of which goes to the rear wheels via a mandatory seven-speed DCT automatic transmission. The exterior specs of this GT500 are top notch, with Ford Performance Blue and the optional (and significantly more expensive) painted white stripes.
1/5 Lamborghini Murcielago
Of the Aventador, the Urus, and all the other recent Lamborghinis that have been getting all the attention for years, seem to be slowly forgetting the iconic Lambo models of the past. One model that is rarely mentioned is the original Murcielago. Launched in 2001 to replace the Diablo, it was the first Lamborghini they built from the ground up under Audi’s ownership, leading the Murcielago to tackle some aspects more sensibly and functionally.
But that didn’t mean it was any less bizarre. The looks were certainly there, and the 6.2-litre V12 provided an appropriate dose of auditory drama. This special Murcielago is an original model from the second model year 2002. What immediately stands out is the color. Most Murciélagos are yellow, or red, or green, or some other bright color, but this is the exceptionally rare Azzurro Aquarius. The 571 horsepower 6.2 V12 sends its power to all four wheels via the highly desirable six-speed manual transmission and all the service details you can think of for some peace of mind. A truly fantastic example of the breed.
