Top Gear races a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS against an Audi TT RS

Top Gear Audi TT vs Porsche 718

In an era of turbocharged engines, the Porsche 918 Cayman GTS proves that atmospheric power can still get the job done.

Top Gear is currently still the largest car show in the world. Current hosts Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuiness and Chris Harris are lucky enough to get behind the wheel of some stunning cars. But some cars don’t quite make the show. In Stig’s Garage on the Top Gear YouTube Channel, Top Gear shows off some cars that don’t make it to the show hosted by Becky Evans. This week it’s the turn of two sports cars in the form of the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS vs the Audi TT RS.

The two German sports cars compared

In the show, the Stig gets behind the wheel of several cars and takes them for a spin around the track. The 718 Cayman GTS has a top speed of 182 mph and a 0-62 time of 4.5 seconds. It has a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine under the hood with 395 hp output and a six-speed manual transmission. The Audi, on the other hand, has a top speed of 255 mph and a 0-62 time of 3.7 seconds. Under the hood is a 2.5 liter five-cylinder turbo engine, which also produces 395 hp. However, this car has a seven-speed S Tronic transmission.

How the two cars drive

In a world full of hybrids and turbochargers and superchargers, Evans gets behind the wheel of both cars and loves the linear power delivery of the naturally aspirated Porsche. She thinks it is a real driver’s car and even more so than the Audi it faces. However, the Audi still offers a lot of performance. She feels that the TT lacks a bit of heart compared to the Porsche and she feels that the car is what drives her, rather than the other way around. However, it has all the mechanical grip to handle the Porsche.

What’s happening on track?

The Stig first gets behind the wheel of the Porsche and that lack of grip compared to the Audi becomes visible with a few more idiosyncratic moments. However, it looks like it is a lot of fun to drive. The Audi, meanwhile, seems to offer a much more refined driving experience, but one that seems to take the fun out of throwing it around the track. When it comes to lap times, the Audi produces a lap time of 1:24.9 on the Top Gear circuit. The Porsche meanwhile did a 1:23.5. So over a second faster than the Audi and proof that mechanical grip may not be everything.
