There is an intense battle between car thieves and car manufacturers. With the advent of technology, most manufacturers now develop their vehicles with heavy contributions from software engineers.

Consequently, this has forced car thieves to reinvent their theft skills as the use of crowbars and clothes hangers becomes useless.

A team of researchers led by Flavio Garcia, a computer scientist at the University of Birmingham in 2013, discovered a hack that allows Volkswagen cars to be ignited without using a key.

Later in 2016, Garcia and a new team of researchers discovered how to hack into the door system of Volkswagen cars released since 1995.

As part of their research, scientists from the University of Birmingham and Kasper & Oswald, an engineering firm, discovered a way to unlock nearly 100 million cars, including Volkswagen, Ford, Opel, Peugeot, Nissan, Fiat, Mitsubishi, Citroen, Romeo and Alfa . .

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that approximately $7.4 billion was lost to auto theft in 2020. At least 810,400 vehicles were reported missing in the same year.

Pandemic, which significantly affects the global economy, has been identified as one of the major contributing factors to car thefts.

As can be seen in the case of Volkswagen vulnerabilities, the manufacturer cannot provide optimal security to any car. Over the years, various inventions and technologies have been used to reduce car thefts.

GPS tracker

Discreetly installing a GPS tracker in a vehicle can help detect the location in the event of theft. The GPS tracking device uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) network.

The device sends unique signals to the network, after which the data provided is used to calculate the current location, direction, time and speed of the tracked vehicle.

Radio signal repellent bags

Many cars today have the keyless function. Manufacturers developed this in their attempt to outsmart thieves who have learned how to start a car by shorting wires pulled from under the dashboard.

As usual, car thieves have gotten smart too. Some of them use devices that can trick a car into sending an encrypted message from the key. By obtaining the key, they can pretend to have the key. This would allow them to unlock the door without any problem and start the car.

When the key is stored in a radio signal that repels pouches, such as Faraday pouches, the device used by car thieves cannot receive the required encrypted message.

Start PIN code

In an effort to tackle keyless car theft, some automakers, such as Tesla, have incorporated a four-digit PIN into some models of their vehicle. This extra security is required after the keyless technology unlocks the car.

Without a correct PIN, the car will refuse to start, regardless of whether the key is nearby or not.

Auto Tracking Platform

Numerous online platforms are created by the government and individuals/private companies for stolen vehicles.

A simple search of the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) will check the database to see if the vehicle has been stolen.

VIN consists of 17 characters – a combination of numbers and capital letters, and is unique to each car. The VIN allows you to identify the characteristics of the vehicle, the manufacturer and the factory in which it was assembled.

Car alarms

Car alarms come with sensors that are activated when the position of your vehicle changes. They can contain two to ten sensors. Some of the sensors include;
● Door sensors. When active, the sensor notifies the alarm when the position of the car door changes. That is why when the door is opened; the alarm is activated.
● Stroke sensors. Thieves with knowledge of the door sensor installed in a car can instead break the window to gain entry. Car alarms with impact sensors can detect this.
● Microphone sensors. Car thieves may decide to use force with little force to gain access to the car. A microphone sensor activates the alarm when an unusual sound is detected.
● Tilt sensor. A car thief, who is afraid to sound the alarm and warn the owner of a car, may decide to remove it from the location with a tow truck. If the vehicle has a tilt sensor, this will trigger the alarm as the orientation will definitely change.
● Proximity sensor. This gives a thief no chance to get close, as the alarm is triggered when it senses an object getting closer to the car.
