WITH the average fuel tank now costing over £100, drivers are desperate for a way to save money.
If you’re looking for a new car, the models that officially consume the least fuel have been revealed in a handy list.
According to the car brand Which car?the most fuel efficient new car currently on sale is the mercedes c300e.
The plug-in hybrid sedan delivered a staggering 470.8 mpg in official tests with a fully charged battery.
While actual miles per gallon are rarely comparable to those in the lab, it’s still a good indicator of which cars use the least fuel and save you the most money.
Second on the list is the Volvo S60 Recharge T8, another plug-in sedan that hit 403 mpg in official testing.
Third, there’s the Range Rover Sport P440e, another PHEV, but this time a large luxury SUV that returned 341.2mpg.

All the cars in the top 10 are plug-in hybrids, relying on being fully charged to achieve the best fuel economy.
The electric driving range of PHEVs has improved a lot of late, meaning they can easily handle the average commute or weekend trip without having to use their engine.


For example, the winning C300e can travel 62 miles on electricity alone.
Which car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “Given the rising cost of living, things like fuel economy are an increasingly important consideration for car buyers.
“The good news is that modern PHEVs in particular are capable of incredible efficiency if you do mostly short trips and plug them in regularly.”
